VHL is a gene that helps to control blood vessel growth in certain parts of the body.
Everyone has two VHL genes (one from their mother, and one from their father). If one of the genes is not working, this is known as having a faulty VHL gene, or having a VHL mutation. People with a faulty VHL gene are known to have Von Hippel-Lindau disease.
