Traditional field borders for whole brain radiation therapy (WBRT) consist of opposed lateral rectangular fields with the following borders encompassing the whole brain.

Direction Description
Superior
  • Overshoot the superior aspect of the skull with a minimum of 1 cm coverage. 
Inferior  
  • Mid-way through the frontal sinus extending to cover the bones of the base of the skull. 
  • Include spinous process of C1 and through spinous process of C2 to ensure the posterior fossa is covered.
Anterior
  • Overshoot the anterior aspect of the skull with a minimum of 1 cm coverage. 
Posterior
  • Overshoot the posterior aspect of the skull with a minimum of 1 cm coverage.
