The lumbar puncture procedure and instillation of chemotherapy is only to be performed by a medical officer. The role of the nurse is to provide assistance to the medical officer as required, perform medication and time out checks, observe the patient throughout the procedure and to provide support to the patient.

After access has been gained via lumbar puncture:
- perform time out procedure with the medical officer immediately prior to the administration of the drug
- ensure all hazardous waste is disposed of as per workcover guidelines
- ensure the medical officer administering the antineoplastic drugs signs the medication order indicating that they have administered the drug(s).
Note: any unused antineoplastic drug that has been opened should be discarded appropriately or alternatively, if not removed from packaging, must be returned to the oncology pharmacy for storage.
