Cystitis is defined as a disorder characterised by inflammation of the bladder which is not caused by an infection of the urinary tract. A common side effect of patients undergoing radiotherapy to the pelvic region, radiation induced cystitis can have a significant effect on the patient’s quality of life.
The reported incidence of radiation induced cystitis varies widely dependent upon time-dose-volume factors. For patients receiving pelvic radiation for various malignancies the reported incidence rate is between 23 and 80%.r
The onset of symptoms is generally acute, although they are usually self limiting and rarely persist longer than 3 months following completion of treatment.r
