Definition
Abdominal pain and pressure is a normal side effect for patients receiving intraperitoneal (IP) treatment with chemotherapy.
Onset/duration
Abdominal pain related to intraperitoneal chemotherapy usually occurs within 48 hours of treatment.
Risk factors
Abdominal pain can also be a sign of other complications associated with:
- mechanical difficulties with the port e.g. port blockage or rupture; or
- port infection; or
- electrolyte imbalance.
Peritonitis caused by chemical irritation of the peritoneal space, infection or both, is a serious complication post this procedure. Signs and symptoms of peritonitis include fever, abdominal pain or vomiting.
