* The consensus recommendation is that Australian pathology laboratories use the CKD-EPI 2009 equation (without the race coefficient) when reporting eGFR (mL/min/1.73 m2). This is reflected in the ADDIKD guideline and utilised in eviQ. In 2021 the original equation was refitted without race (ie CKD-EPI 2021)2. However, to date, this adjustment has not been adopted by either Australian or international nephrology groups in the cancer setting. See the ADDIKD guideline for further details.
Body Surface Area (BSA) adjusted eGFRCKD-EPI equation3
BSA-adjusted eGFRCKD-EPI (mL/min) = [eGFRCKD-EPI (mL/min/1.73 m2) × BSA (m2)]/ 1.73
Note that BSA can be calculated using Mosteller or Dubois Dubois formulas.
Mosteller BSA equation 4
BSA (m2) =
Dubois Dubois BSA equation 5
BSA (m2) = 0.007184 x (height [cm])0.725 x (weight [kg])0.425
Body Mass Index (BMI) equation 6
BMI (kg/m2) = actual weight (kg) / (height [m])2
Rounding
Rounding is applied to the final result, no rounding is applied throughout the calculations.
- BSA is calculated to two decimal places.
- eGFR and BSA–adjusted eGFR are calculated to the nearest whole number.
