Tinnitus (e.g. ringing in the ears or head) is usually reversible; whilst hearing loss is dose-related and cumulative, it is generally irreversible and may be worse in those with pre-existing hearing problems.
Cisplatin and carboplatin related ototoxicity is caused by damage to the inner ear.
Ototoxicity can occur within days to weeks of commencing treatment.
- pre-existing hearing impairment
- cumulative dose of cisplatin
- concurrent radiotherapy
- concurrent use of ototoxic drugs (e.g. aminoglycosides, diuretics)
- renal dysfunction
- age (i.e. children and the elderly are at increased risk of developing ototoxicity).
