Oesophagitis is an inflammation of the mucosal lining of the oesophagus. Any patient who develops oral mucositis is at risk of oesophagitis. Similar to mucositis, oesophagitis can progress to ulceration, haemorrhage, secondary infection and pain.
Patients more at risk include those:
- receiving corticosteroids, anticoagulants, and/or NSAID analgesics
- receiving combined chemoradiation treatment
- with oral mucositis secondary to chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
